Poland finally broke through for their first United Cup championship today, Sunday 11th January 2026, in Sydney, beating Switzerland 2–1 in the final of the 2026 United Cup.
The tie began with a surprise result when Belinda Bencic defeated world No. 2 Iga Świątek in a 3–6, 6–0, 6–3 set, giving Switzerland an early lead.
Bencic finished the tournament unbeaten in singles and mixed doubles and was later named United Cup Finals Most Valuable Player.
Poland answered back in the men’s match with Hubert Hurkacz beating Stan Wawrinka in a 6–3, 3–6, 6–3 set. This was Hurkacz’s first tournament back after nearly seven months on the sidelines because of knee surgery.
The championship was decided in the mixed doubles. Poland’s Katarzyna Kawa and Jan Zielinski beat Bencic and Jakub Paul 6–4, 6–3, to seal the victory.
“We’ve finally made it. Third time lucky,” said Świątek, referencing Poland’s runner-up finishes in previous United Cups.
“I really felt it was a team effort this year. Hubi, what a comeback after so many months… Our doubles team, wow! You just beat everyone.”
Hurkacz, reflecting on the victory and what it meant for Polish tennis, added:
“I’m kind of speechless. It’s really incredible… a massive day for Poland, for Polish tennis. We showed how strong we are as a Polish country in tennis.”
The title capped an impressive run for Poland, who advanced to the final by beating the defending champions, the United States, in the semifinals.
