Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has issued a personal account outlining the medical events that preceded the death of her 21-month-old son following a procedure carried out at Euracare Hospital.
Adichie’s media representatives confirmed that the statement was written by her and initially shared privately with family members and a small circle of close associates before entering the public domain.
According to the account, the family was in Lagos during the Christmas period when the child developed an illness that later required hospital admission.
Medical arrangements were subsequently made for the child to be transferred to the United States the following day for further treatment, with a receiving medical team reportedly prepared in Baltimore.
Adichie stated that prior to the planned transfer, Nigerian doctors recommended a series of diagnostic and preparatory procedures, including imaging and vascular access. The family was referred from Atlantis Hospital to Euracare Hospital to carry out the procedures.
She said the child was sedated for the medical process on January 6. Shortly thereafter, complications arose, resulting in the child becoming unresponsive.
He was resuscitated and transferred to intensive care, where further medical distress occurred. The child died later that day.
In her statement, Adichie raised concerns about the medical handling of the procedure, alleging lapses in monitoring and questioning adherence to established clinical protocols.
She attributed responsibility to the attending anesthesiologist and further questioned the hospital’s internal oversight processes.
Adichie also indicated that she had since become aware of other reported incidents involving the same medical practitioner, which she said heightened concerns about patient safety and institutional accountability.
At the time of publication, Euracare Hospital had not released an official response addressing the claims made in the statement. No public findings have been issued by regulatory or professional medical bodies regarding the incident.
The account has intensified public scrutiny of pediatric care standards, procedural safety, and clinical governance within Nigeria’s private healthcare system.
