Tunisia finally ended their 12-year wait for an opening Africa Cup of Nations victory with a commanding 3-1 Group C win over Uganda in Rabat on Tuesday.
The Eagles of Carthage took just 10 minutes to break the deadlock, with Ellyes Skhiri heading home from a corner. Tunisia doubled their lead five minutes before half-time when Copenhagen forward Elias Achouri fired a side-foot volley into the net.
Achouri added his second goal 26 minutes from time, slotting in after goalkeeper Salim Magoola spilled Ali Abdi’s powerful shot. Uganda struggled to respond despite introducing forwards Denis Omedi and Travis Mutyaba at the break, and did not register a shot on target until added time, when Omedi scored with a deflected strike.
The win sent Tunisia top of Group C on goal difference, following Nigeria’s 2-1 victory over Tanzania in Fès earlier.
Tunisia will next face the Super Eagles in Fès on Saturday at 20:00 GMT, while Uganda take on East African rivals Tanzania in Rabat at 17:30 GMT.
