Remo Stars have been knocked out of the CAF Champions League after suffering a 2–0 defeat to South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns in the second leg of their final qualifying tie on Sunday.
The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) champions went into the game in Pretoria needing a miracle after losing 5–1 in the first leg in Abeokuta. However, their hopes of a comeback were dashed by a dominant Sundowns performance.
Nuno Santos opened the scoring for the home side midway through the first half after combining well with Aubrey Modiba on the left wing. Peter Shalulile then doubled the lead shortly before half-time, finishing from close range after Remo Stars failed to clear a corner.
After the break, Daniel Ogunmodede’s men looked more organised and avoided another heavy defeat. They worked hard defensively to contain the South African giants but created very few chances in attack.
The result sealed a 7–1 aggregate victory for Mamelodi Sundowns, who advanced to the group stage for the 11th consecutive season, reaffirming their status as one of Africa’s most dominant clubs.
For Remo Stars, the defeat ends what had been a promising continental campaign — their first at this stage of the competition. The Ikenne-based side will now shift focus back to their domestic league commitments.
Nigeria’s only remaining representatives in this season’s CAF Champions League are Rivers United, who advanced after defeating Black Bulls of Mozambique on aggregate.
