The President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Musa Gusau, has expressed confidence in the Super Eagles’ preparations ahead of their 2026 FIFA World Cup continental playoff clash against Gabon in November.
Speaking about the team’s progress under head coach Eric Chelle, Gusau admitted that the appointment initially raised doubts among some Nigerians but said the coach has now justified his selection.
“Eric came in despite the fact that a lot of people had reservations, asking how we arrived at that decision. But thank God, he has shown Nigerians why he deserves to be the coach of the Super Eagles,” Gusau said in an interview with the Super Eagles media team, as reported by allnigeriasoccer.com.
He praised Chelle’s performance in the qualifiers, noting that the coach managed six matches, winning four and drawing two. “If we had shown even a little of that form in the first four matches, we wouldn’t have been in this position,” Gusau added.
The NFF President also reflected on the challenges the team faced before Chelle’s appointment, pointing out that three different coaches had handled the side during the qualifying campaign.
“It was a necessity that we couldn’t avoid, but we thank God we are here now, and we’ll work hard to reach our ultimate goal,” he stated.
Gusau revealed that preparations for the playoff matches have already begun. “We are aware of the countries we are going to play and the venues. As I’m talking to you, preparations have already started,” he said.
He further commended the players for their commitment and determination, noting that they fully understand what qualification means for their careers and for Nigeria.
“The level of commitment and zeal from the players is impressive. Going to the World Cup means so much to them — even more than many Nigerians may realise,” Gusau noted.
He also praised the team’s fighting spirit in recent matches and assured fans that the NFF is working closely with the government and other relevant bodies to ensure proper preparation for the playoffs.
Nigeria will face Gabon in the first round of the continental playoffs, with the winner going on to meet either Cameroon or DR Congo in the final African playoff for a place in the intercontinental tournament scheduled to hold in Mexico in March 2026.
The Super Eagles sealed their playoff spot with a commanding 4-0 victory over Benin Republic in Uyo, where Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen scored a hat-trick.
