Manchester United and Liverpool could battle it out to sign Bayern Munich defender Dayot Upamecano on a free transfer at the end of the campaign, according to Bild in Germany.
The Frenchman has entered the last year of his contract with the Bavarian giants and as things stand, he has yet to negotiate an extension.
There has been a basic agreement over the salary, but there is still a disagreement over the signing-on fee. Upamecano wants a staggering 17 million euros to prolong his stay with the German champions.
This has created a difficult situation for the Munich heavyweights and it is claimed that the likes of Manchester United and Liverpool could capitalise on the setback to persuade the Frenchman to join them next summer.
Liverpool have already initiated talks with the player’s agents, but they are likely to face competition from United, who are also determined to land a marquee centre-back during the summer of 2026, as per several reports.
