Nick Kyrgios has confirmed he will not compete in singles at the Australian Open in 2026, saying he is not yet ready for the physical demands of five-set matches.
In a message shared on social media, Kyrgios explained that after discussions with his team, he has decided to focus on doubles this year. While he says he is fit and back on court, he admitted that singles at a Grand Slam remains a step too far at this stage of his comeback.
Kyrgios added that the Australian Open means a great deal to him, but he would rather step aside than take a singles spot from someone fully prepared to go the distance. He described the decision as part of a longer-term plan, calling it “building blocks” toward a full return.
The 29-year-old also reassured fans that he plans to return to singles at Melbourne Park in the future, saying he expects to be back next year and is motivated to compete again at the highest level.
