Super Eagles and Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye made a strong return to Serie A on Monday night as his side earned a 1-1 draw against Cremonese at the Stadio Giovanni Zini.
The Nigerian shot-stopper was making his first appearance of the season after serving a two-month suspension imposed before the start of the 2025/26 campaign over betting irregularities involving people close to him. Although Okoye was not directly implicated in the investigation, the Italian football authorities enforced the temporary ban that kept him out of Udinese’s opening six league games.
Okoye was immediately restored to the starting lineup by head coach Kosta Runjaic, who showed full confidence in his number one goalkeeper. The 25-year-old conceded early in the third minute when Filippo Terracciano’s header found the bottom corner, but he recovered well and made key saves to keep his team in the game.
His most crucial stop came midway through the second half when he denied Jamie Vardy from close range, ensuring Udinese avoided a second defeat in three matches. Okoye also impressed with his ball distribution, completing 22 of 29 passes and 10 accurate long balls.
After the game, Runjaic praised Okoye’s professionalism and readiness, saying, “Okoye has always been our number one, even when he wasn’t available. He’s trained well and used this period to reflect on himself. We’re happy to have him back and have faith in him.”
The draw came after Nicolò Zaniolo equalised for Udinese in the 50th minute, cancelling out Cremonese’s early goal. The result ended Udinese’s run of defeats and lifted them to mid-table in Serie A.
For Nigeria, Okoye’s return is a major boost ahead of the 2026 World Cup playoffs in November. His performance not only brings renewed confidence but also reintroduces healthy competition in the Super Eagles’ goalkeeping department.
With Stanley Nwabali recently drawing criticism for his on-field reactions, Okoye’s return to top form could strengthen Nigeria’s options between the posts.
